Hydropower Sustainability Alliance (HSA)

Alain currently serves as Deputy Executive Director of the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance (HSA) where he oversees the development and implementation of the Hydropower Sustainability across the globe. His work focuses on supporting governments to embed it into their regulations, working with private sector to apply it on their projects and partnering with civil society to make sure it continues raising the sustainability bar for industry.

Previously, he acted as the Senior Sustainability Specialist at the International Hydropower Association (IHA). Alain joined IHA in March 2019 to address global sustainability issues in the hydropower sector. He led the development and launch of the Hydropower Sustainability Standard which provides a practical framework to assess and certify the sustainability performance of hydropower projects.

He has experience working as an environmental scientist on multiple international projects, including analysing the environmental and social impacts of mining on agricultural communities in Thailand as a Fulbright Scholar and developing regional nutrient reduction strategies in the Mississippi River Basin with the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Alain holds an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development from the University of Cambridge and a BA in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania.
