EDP Generation

Joana Freitas is the Executive Board Member of EDP Generation, the conventional generation unit of EDP Group, where she holds responsibilities in just transition from coal to green energy, innovation and business development, digital transformation, sustainability and stakeholder engagement.  

Mrs Freitas advocates for gender balance through collaboration with universities and research centres helping to bring diverse voices to the energy transition debate in Europe. She is also a Vice-Chair of the Generation and Environment Committee of Eurelectric, the sector association, which represents the common interests of the electricity industry at a pan-European level, plus its affiliates and associates on several other continents. Prior to joining EDP, she worked for seven years as a consultant at McKinsey & Company in London, Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon.

Mrs Freitas holds a degree in economics from the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto (Portugal) and MBA from INSEAD. In 2019 she completed the Future Power Grid Managers Programme – a joint initiative of Vlerick Business School and Florence School of Regulation. In March 2023 she completed Climate Change and Energy: Policymaking for the Long Term, at the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education Programme. This is a course designed for policymakers and corporate leaders who want to be part of the solution to the threat of climate change.
