Speaker biography

Miguel Patena is the Innovation Technology Director in EDP Produção. He manages several innovative projects, in particular floating photovoltaics and storage applications for solar and geographical isolated electrical systems. He is also responsible for the International Division in EDP Produção, dedicated to consultancy services.

Previously, he managed the engineering team responsible for the design of the conventional generation fleet in EDP Produção, mainly hydro. They had a total of about 350 M€/year investment in the last seven years.

He has coordinated the design of thermal, biomass, cogeneration and hydro power plants. He is a specialist in Distributed Control Systems, Corporate Process Information Systems and Dispatch Centers, where he was responsible for the design of EDP Renewables Dispatch Centre and Azores (EDA) Distribution and Generation Dispatch. Furthermore, he was responsible for the development of 220 kW Floating Photovoltaic pilot project hybridised with a Hydro Power Plant in Portugal.

Since December 2017, he has been a non-executive member of the board of Electricidade dos Açores (EDA).

Miguel holds a Bologna Power Systems degree from Instituto Superior Técnico de Lisboa and the Business Management Directives Programme by AESE (IESE). He also has a post-graduate degree in Sustainable Energy Markets from the European Energy Institute.
