Speaker biography

Manfred Spreafico is acting chairperson of the International Sediment Initiative of UNESCO IHP, having previously been President of the International Commission for the Hydrology of the Rhine Basin for 20 years.

Manfred completed his studies in Civil Engineering at the Federal Technical University at Zurich. He also received his doctoral degree for studies of optimal regulation of natural lakes and hydropower reservoirs.

He began his career in the Swiss National Hydrological Survey and in 1997 was elected as a Professor at the University of Berne. From 2008 he started working as a consultant for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in river basins, specialising in hydrometeorology, flood and sediment management.

Manfred has vast experience working with national and international organisations, commissions and groups in the fields of hydrology, erosion and sediment. Through this collaboration, he has developed estimation methods for sediment transport in mountain environments. He has worked across all the continents in many roles including lecturer, trainer, project manager and project member.
