Speaker biography

Luiz Gabriel Todt De Azevedo joined IDB Invest in 2016, the private arm of the IDB Group as the Division Chief of the Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance Division (SEG).

Previously, he held senior positions at the World Bank and the World Wildlife Fund for Conservation (WWF). Over the course of his career he has been directly involved with over a dozen large hydropower projects including the Santo Antonio, Teles Pires and Baixo Iguaçu projects in Brazil, Chaglla in Peru, Ituango in Colombia, Alto Maipo in Chile, Lauca and Cabambe in Angola, amongst many others. He has worked with development projects in around 40 countries for over 30 years.

Throughout his career, Luiz Gabriel has been involved with research projects and teaching activities as well as having published numerous articles and book chapters. He has received awards for his work, including the IHA Mosonyi Award for excellence in hydropower, for his career contribution to sustainable hydropower development.

Gabriel holds an MSc and a PhD in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University.
