Speaker biography

José A. Alderete Rodríguez has been the Paraguayan General Director of Itaipu Binacional since August 2018. He is also the Co-Chairman of the Partnership ‘Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions’ between the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and Itaipu.

José has varied professional and political experience; he served as a Board Member of the Social Security Institute for four years from 1989 and Senator of the Republic of Paraguay until 1998. He also held the position of Member of the Board of Directors of Yacyretá Binational Entity from 1999 to 2003 and then Minister of Public Works and Communications of the Republic of Paraguay until 2006.

He has also been a member of the Governing Board, the Executive Committee and treasurer of the National Republican Association – Colorado Party between 2001 and 2006, as well as serving as their President from 2006 to 2010.

José graduated in Economics, Administrative and Accounting Sciences from the National University of Asunción (UNA).
