François Edwards is lead river ecologist at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, a UK government organisation for research excellence in environmental science. He has worked in aquatic ecology for 20 years; his diverse career includes academic research, environmental regulatory agencies and private sector work.
François has spent his career on freshwater ecosystems and aquatic biodiversity, and their management in human landscapes, specifically the monitoring and ecological assessment of rivers. He has worked on fundamental environmental issues such as urban water pollution, agri-environmental management and river flow regulation, in the EU and abroad.
A major focus of his work is environmental flow assessments for water supply abstraction and hydropower projects. Recent projects include work in the Liaohe basin in China, the Shire River in Malawi and the Volta basin in Ghana.
