Demetrios Papathanasiou is the Manager for the Energy and Extractives Global Practice for the South Asia Region of the World Bank. In his role he manages the South Asia energy unit, a team of 35 staff with a portfolio of projects and trust funds of more than $10 billion and annual lending commitments averaging about $1.3 billion.
He has worked with the World Bank Group for more than 18 years on Energy and Infrastructure in Africa, Latin America, East Europe and the Balkans, South and East Asia, as well as the Pacific Islands.
Demetrios has contributed to the development of energy policies in several countries and has also worked on power generation projects using diverse technologies such as thermal, hydropower, solar, wind, and geothermal. He has led large teams on complex utility and sector reforms, as well as public-private partnership transactions.
A professional Electrical Engineer, Demetrios holds an MSc in Environmental Technology and a PhD in Energy and the Environment from Imperial College London.
