Bill Girling is a Senior Analyst at the International Hydropower Association (IHA).
He started at the IHA in 2016 as interim director of their hydropower development work programme. As part of this, he was overseeing their work across a broad range of topics, including climate mitigation and adaptation, water consumption, the macroeconomic benefits of hydropower, finance and investment and clean energy systems.
He also coordinated workshops, webinars and other key initiatives to build and share knowledge around sustainable hydropower development.
Bill brings 35 years of experience from the Canadian hydropower sector, having worked for most of his career as a hydropower planning engineer at Manitoba Hydro. His experience includes leading on economic studies of the refurbishment of ageing hydropower facilities, the coordination of asset management optimisation studies, and providing technical expertise for climate change impact and adaptation studies.
He worked briefly with a consulting engineering firm prior to joining Manitoba Hydro in 1981, where he was based until early 2016.
Bill also has extensive experience in organising and chairing numerous technical conferences and seminars, both within Manitoba Hydro and as a former president of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba.
Bill holds a BSc in civil engineering from the University of Manitoba.
