Speaker biography

Arturo D. Alarcon is a senior specialist of the Energy Division at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), currently based in Brazil. He acts as the focal point for hydropower at the energy division of the IDB, coordinating the different activities to support sustainable hydropower development in the region.

Arturo joined the IDB in 2010, and has been working on the development and supervision of projects for energy generation, transmission, distribution, rural electrification and alternative energy in Brazil and the region.

Before joining the IDB, Arturo worked as a researcher at the Institute for Energy and Environment at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, developing new planning methods for renewable and distributed generation, smart grids, energy storage and power systems.

Arturo’s education includes a PhD in Electrical Engineering with focus on power systems planning, and a Master’s degree in Electrical Power Engineering with Business, both from the University of Strathclyde.
