Speaker biography

Alessandro Palmieri is an independent water infrastructure adviser with over 43 years of experience in water infrastructure planning and development with a focus on dams and hydropower projects. During the course of his career, he has been involved in the full development cycle of dams and hydro projects in over 60 countries, in every continent.

From 1997 to 2013, Alessandro worked as Lead Dam Specialist for the World Bank. This involved having overall responsibility on the technical aspects of the institution’s portfolio of dams including over 130 projects, with direct engagement in 86 water infrastructure operations. He then went on to work for Salini-Impregilo, a construction company, advising them on their major water infrastructure projects globally.

Alessandro is recognised as an authority on water resources infrastructure and in October 2009 was included in the list of the 60 most influential people ever in the dams and hydropower industry.

Alessandro’s education includes a distinction for his Masters in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering from the University of Rome. In May 2010 he received an award for ICOLD’s honorary membership in recognition of services provided to the International Dam Society. In the same year, he also received the India Power Award as one of the three top international people in hydropower business. His professional membership includes ICOLD and United States Society on Dams (USSD).
