This workshop, supported by the Francophone Institute for Sustainable Development, will be the first tailored workshop for the francophone hydropower community designed to introduce the new Hydropower Sustainability Tools. The tools comprise the Hydropower Sustainability Guidelines on Good International Industry Practice (HGIIP), which define expected performance, an expanded version of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP) to include climate change mitigation and resilience, and a new Hydropower Sustainability ESG Gap Analysis (HESG) Tool to identify gaps against good practice in environmental, social and governance topics. The workshop will also showcase examples of good practice in sustainable hydropower in francophone countries, including projects and programmes from Électricité de France, The Nature Conservancy Gabon, the Association of Power Utilities of Africa, Hydro-Québéc and ENERGIES 2050. Finally, this workshop will explore how the Hydropower Sustainability Tools can help enhance the impact and sustainability of development projects in francophone countries worldwide with a focus on Africa. The objective of the workshop is to introduce the new Hydropower Sustainability Tools to French speaking delegates, identify linkages to relevant IFI standards and to discuss how these tools can contribute to wider sustainable hydropower development, especially in the context of francophone Africa. The workshop will also look at case studies of good practice in sustainable hydropower in francophone countries. In terms of its contribution to sustainable development, the workshop covers many of the SDGs but it will most directly address SDG 7 ‘Affordable and Clean Energy’, SDG 6 ‘Clean Water and Sanitation’, and SDG 13 ‘Climate Action’.
