Frades II and floating photovoltaic plant
This study tour supported by EDP provides World Hydropower Congress delegates with the opportunity to visit the Frades II hydro plant and the pilot project of the Floating Photovoltaic Plant in Alto Rabagão. These projects are located on the north coast of Portugal, near the border with Spain.
Delegates can book a study tour when registering for the Congress. If you have already registered and would like to add a tour to your booking you can do so via your ‘MyArea’ page.
Frades II hydro plant
One of the most important reasons to visit the Frades II project is because it is equipped with variable-speed pump-turbines. The project began in 2010 and was the first of its kind to be connected to the network in 2016.
Besides its technical complexity, the project stands out for its technological innovation and high installed power (two reversible pump-turbines of 420 MVA), allowing a variation of pump power between 300 MW and 390 MW. This is one of the few pump-turbine projects in Europe and one of the largest in the world.
Floating photovoltaic pilot project
The visit to a pilot project of floating photovoltaic panels will give visitors the opportunity to learn about the first project of this kind implemented in Portugal.
Both projects are part of EDP’s portfolio of 83 hydroelectric plants, three thermal power stations and a cogeneration plant in Portugal.
